The Mahabharata War – The Veracity of Epic Proved by Recent Archaeological Excavations

The Bhagavadgita glarifise ‘kurukshetra’ as ‘Dharmakshetra’ – the  place of Dharma.   Rg veda designates Kurukshetra as “vara a  prithivyah” (Rg vead 3.23.4;3.53.11) the choicest spot on earth. The  Mahabharata puts it at paw with heaven itself:

“Dakshinena Sarasvatya

Drishadvatyuttarena cha

Ye vasanti Kuruksetre

Te vasanti trivishtasye”(Mahabharata 3.83.4)

Then it was in kurukshetra’s sacred lake Saryanavan, where according to Rg veda (1.84.13-14) the bones of Dadhanch Atharvana (Dadhichi) were found with which the thunderbolt (VaJrayudh) for slaying ninety nine vritras, was made.

Next, as our history hasit, the entire Bharat is in a sense an extension of the “Dharmakshetratva” of kurukshetra. For, the value system of our culture, which is still vibrant, was initially formulated here, and it was from here that it difused to various parts of our country and abroad.

Over 35 sites of the Mahabharata have been identified which have yielded material culture – painted grey ware (PGW) – pottery painted over with designs in black pigment, and antiquities in uniform and identical levels. This Pottery is made of a superior Quality of paste formed of well levigated clay and fine, Well – burnt fabric achieved by distributed heat in the Klin evenly. This civilization is also characterized by the use of iron and other alloy metals which show a high level of knowledge of metallurgy.

Hastinapur, located between Meerut and Mawana in uttar Pradesh is now a forgotten village, but excavations in 1952, revealed the existence of vidurka – tilla (vidura’s palace), Draupadi – ki – rasoi (Draupadi’s Kitchen) and Draupadi Ghat, besides copper utensils, iron seals, Ornaments made of gold and silver, terracotta discs and several oblong – shaped ivory dice used in the game of chauper.

Iron objects numbering 135, and which included arrow and spearheads, shafts, tongs, hooks, axes, and knives indicate the existence of a vigorous iron industry. There are indications of brick – lined roads and drainage systems, and an agro – livestock based economy. The painted grey ware (PGW) of Hastinapura has been assigned to 2800 B.c and beyond. Kota venkatachalam assigns 3138 B.c., as the year of Mahabharata War according to the calculations based on the movement of saptarishi mandala given in the text of Mahabharata Later, according to the Matsya and vayu puranas a heavy flood on the river Ganga destroyed Hastinapura and Nichakshu, the fifth king after parikshit (Arjuna’s grand son) who ascended the throne after kurukshetra war, shifted his capital to kausambi, 50 kilomters from prayagraj. There is definite archaeological evidence of a massive flood level. The devastation by the Ganga is still visible in the thick clay soil. After the exile, the pand vas asked for three villages: Pstructures with aniprastha, Sonaprastha and Indraprastha, generally identified with the modern panipat, Sonepat and puranaqila in New Delhi. These sites have also yielded the same pottery and anti Quities. Building structures with drainage sytems and painted grey ware (PGW) were excavated at purana Qila.

Kurukshetra, now in Haryana, was the site kurukshtra war. Excavations here now yielded iron arrow and spearheads dated by Thermoluminence Test (TM) to 3100 B.c (CIRCA). Today it is town bathing Pools. At the Brahmasarovar, a large lake 3,600 feet by 1500 feet, Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra bathed after a solar eclipse. Bhishma Lay on his bed of arrows at Bhishma Kund. Arjuna shot an arrow into the earth and a fountain of Water flowed out directly into Bhishma’s mouth, Creating the Ban Gang pond. Eight kilometers away is the Village of Thaneswar, the capital of Harsha vardhana in the Sixth century.

The big Question is this:

The excavations were abruptly stopped

Soon after these finds were revealed and

Were never resumed. Why?

In Search of Krishna

The submergence of Dwaraka is described vividly in the epic Mahabharata. Arjuna asked the residents of Dwaraka to vacate the city immediately as it was going to be submerged by the sea. Dvaravati, according to the Sabhaparva of the Mahabharata, was heavily fortified. Dr S.R. Rao started excavating the Dwarkadhish till he hit the remains of 15th, 12th, and 9th century A.D. temples. He dug on, passing two earlier temples, until, at a depth of 9.5 metres, they came to the remains of two towns destroyed by the sea. From the ealier of the two they recovered the characteristic lustrous red Pottery of the Period and region. Encouraged by his findings, he decided to search for Dwaraka.

Underwater exploration yilded two gate ways, fort walls, bastions and a Jetty at a depth of 10 metres off Dwaraka in the Sindhusagar (Arabian sea). Apart from corresponding to the Mahabharata’s description of the city and the mode of its submergence, it has directly ficed a date by Thermoluminence (TM) for the Pottery of Dwarka at 3520 years BP (before present).

Other finds include pottery, bronze and iron implements, three – holed triangular stone anchors at Dwarka, a late Harappan type of seal made of conch of a composite animal – a bull, unicorn and goat – and lustruous red ware pottery at Bet Dwaraka, linking the site to the Harappan culture, and thereby establishing its continuity.

Bet Dwaraka was an island frequented by who is said to have visited its Shankodhara Temple. It also contains the only ancient temple for Matsya, the epic savior of the World at the time of the Great Dissolution by floods. The materials discovered at Dwaraka corroborate history and fix a date for the inundation of the city between 1500 and 1300 B.C.

The most emarkable aspect of both the epic and epic hero is their geography. The Mahabharata mentions many small villages, tanks and hills, which are still identifiable.  What is the historicity of the Mahabharata? Our doubting historians will never accept any of these finds unless they are supported by inscriptions, which will never be forthcoming as the earliest inscriptions belong to ‘300B.C.

Another most controversial site is the temple at Mathura, the birth place of Krishna. No excavation has been done here. But tradition and eminent historians associate the site with the birth of Krishna, which is why Aurangzeb consciously chose to build a mosque over it.

  1. THE ARTICLE IS INTERESTING. THERE MUST BE A CONCERTED
EFFORT BY GOVERNMENT OF INDIA TO UNDERTAKE THOROUGH
    ARCHEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION INTO MAHABHARATA WAR
    AROUND KURUKESHETRA.

IN EUROPE THEY FOUND THE ARCHEOLOGICAL PROOF OF
TROY. BEFORE THAT IT WAS CONSIDERED AS MERE LEGEND.
LIKEWISE WE IN INDIA MUST RESEARCH INTO IT AND
    ESTABLISH THE FACT.

JUST BECUSE THEY HAVE NOT FOUND EVIDENCE (BECAUSE
OF LACK OF INITIATIVE BY ARCHEOLOGICAL SURGEY OF
INDIA), WE CANNOT COME TO CONCLUSION THAT
    MAHARABHARATA WAR IS A MYTH.

SOME OF THE SO CALLED SCHOLARS OF INDOLOGY
ESPECIALLY IN THE WEST DISMISSED MAHABHRATA AND
    RAMANYA AS MERE MYTH.

HOW CAN THEY COME TO ARROGANT AND HEADSTRONG
    CONCLUSION WITHOUT RESEARCHING INTO IT?

IF WRIGHT BROTHER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT IT
IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR MAN TO FLY, WE WILL NOT BE
    FLYING IN AIRPLANES NOW.

PEOPLE WHO ARROGANTLY ASSUME THAT THESE ARE
MYTHS PROVE THAT THE GREAT WAR HAS NOT TAKEN
    PLACE.

FINDING OF KRISHNA’S DWARAKA UNDER THE OCEAN
IS A BREAKTHROUGH. WE HAVE TO PROVE IT TO THE
WORLD THAT THE HISTORIC WAR (SHALL WE CALL IT
THE REAL WORLD-WAR ONE) IS A FACT.

  2. The excavations done in India till now are very less. The only major excavations done were during the govt. of BJP.But as soon as this govt went out of power the excavations were stopped. Why they were stopped, the answer I guess everyone knows.Even today if excavations are seriously carried out in India complete existence of ancient vedic civilization can be unearthed.Historicity of Mahabharata and Ramayana would be established totally.

  3. It is very interesting. That the excavations were abruptly stopped is a news and is disturbing. When the whole India is interested in the findings, who could be the cursed soul that could have watered the interest of the reserchers with sinic ulterrior motive? We need to clenze the higher ups in the politics off psudo seculariasts and low born souls of all creed and communities who occupy high chairs of powewer.

    1. Well, the picture has been created by ISKCON followers.

It is from the story of Mahabharata, specifically from the great war.

The old man is Shri Bhisma, the one with the wheel in his hand is Lord Krsna (the ruler of Dwaraka) & the one holding back Lord Krsna is Arjuna.

It is said that Shri Bhisma wanted to see Lord Krsna yielding a weapon in the war but Lord Krsna had decided not to fight in the war.

At this, Shri Bhisma said that he will make Lord Krsna take up a weapon during the war. He ultimately did so & the present scene depicts that.

But Lord Krsna did not use the weapon & in the entire war he did not fight anyone.

  4. Our History need to be rewrite from present ideology. There was existed the great civilization at the bank of river sraswathi and witnessed great the great epic war. excavation are stopped becasue of the worthy secondus to british that is congress and its minority vote bank ploitics.

All this anomly will continue to occur till the congress exists

  5. Let us not please any country or community. We the Indians, especialy the Hindus have all the rights to know about our past, and rewrite,if required, our history. I do not understand why our successive governments have not done anything so far or even made efforts to explore our glorious past. Are our Statesmen not part of our past? If not, why no one is bothered.I hope and pray that some unbiassed person orders for vigorous exploration to convert the two myths to history.Raghu

  6. It does not matter much to this holy land and its pious people when somebody stops such excavation. The soul remains the same. Nobody can do any harm to our soul. Mahabharat remains in our heart as one of the hoiliest scripture which is nothing but a history of this holy land. Only one thing pains in heart we are so many but cannot keep and maintain our heritage. More painful it becomes when somebody of this country doubts such things. Mind it there was no other religion during Mahabharat Age. Hence, we irrespective of our religion should come foreward and appeal to Govt to pls allow us to know our history.

  7. Facts or myths such as this may reveal subjects so sensitive towards other religious beliefs will indeed cause much controversy. Or truth, that may be disturbing to preachers in modern industrial churches. Mans path to evolving is being tethered away by belief brought from distant past, while being told by churches that modern findings should be ignored. Even today’s court rooms have In God we Trust in their confines. An open mind can prove this god to be invisible and a un-truth. Modern dictators need followers not logical leaders of truth. Sadly actual truth is kept away from the minds of humanity creating only wonder, which is mostly based on the meaning of the two words faith and belief. Which keeps you hanging in it’s suspended mist. A faith in a belief may have nothing of an outcome, ever. Especially if your simply just told it exists and now think it’s truth without proof. A 2000 year old belief constantly told many times over without fact may never receive an answer of actual truth, thus belief could last indefinitely. Or until a truth logically takes it’s place. Like we see here being avoided.

  8. As a layman and as a busy middle class, I have often ventured to sites like these, astounded by peoples efforts, who have gone to lengths to prove my faith and our past… to just log off and dream about the day all these things might be proved. It is a shame that a great civilization like ours has not been able to Validate itself. More agonizing fact remains that the elected governments one after the other (including NDA) does not want to pursue these issues due to their political compulsion. What is left with us is a virtue of patience… a lot of it. That is why, we remained silent when Government informs SC that Ramayana and Mahabharata was just a Myth. We also remained silent, when DMK supremo calls Rama as a drunkard in the glare of national television. Still, many of us have gone to srilanka (including political leaders) to visit Ramayana site. I asked the learned people in this forum, to create the will and start a campaign to prove our history. I will be glad that the next generation knows what really happenned in our akhand bharat.

  9. We want to use one of your image (Mahabharata) for academic purpose (non-commercial use) at ILLL University of Delhi (India), therefore we need copyright permission for the same. URL of the Image is given below:

  10. You say that the government should take care of this. They will take care of all this when they will get over their own wrong doings.
People like Ashwin Sanghi have started raking this endeavour to publicise the facts. More facts are given in the novel .. “The Krishna Key”…

  11. I too have read and seen the movie mahabharata. But where is the proof, I ask? I am yearning for some proof? Please give it soon before I die, for I am already 65. Thanks to this world.

  12. I am reading, nearly closing, the book “The Complete Life of Krishna” by Vanamali and have enjoyed reading this amazing story. I wonder then if there was such an epic and cruel battle at ‘Kurukshetra’ for real ? Even if it represents the very fertile imaginations of the folks of India, the epic story is quite outstanding and a wonderful contribution to human spirituality. Hari Krishna and any other Avatars. Amen.

  13. The ‘Message’ is far more important than the ‘proof” – either way. Hare Krishna, Namo Buddhaya, Halleluya, Shalom, Hail Mary..et al to all Maha Avatars. in gratitude.

  14. Mind you, the archaeology and ancient depictions cause one to scream for deepr and earnest research regarding this all too inpressive ( in suggestion at least ) that a major and significant battle raged that forever set in the lore history of Kurukshetra. The question is really is really nagging me..”Dying to know !!

  15. If this article is true, it will revolutionise our conceptions of the Iron Age. Hitherto, no iron weapons are known from the Indus Valley Civilisation, and even in other countries, it is extremely rare to find iron being used as far back as claimed in this article. Hence, the claims advanced in this article are in need of further confirmation. As of now, according to confirmed sources and publications, the oldest remains excavated in Kurukshetra are of the Buddhist period. May be these older finds mentioned in the article are in need of further research and clarification.
